Inevitably, my work became weighted with a character spurred into being by a plush toy from my toddlerhood. Named “Asmwe,” short for “A Small Mammal Who Sometimes Weeps” he has many origins, all of them equally valid. Similarly, he has many manifestations, most often and most eloquently realized in brush and ink. Asmwe is often a useful “substance,” a simple language from which I compose drawings.
